Hurricane Watch for much of southern Baja
While Hurricane Rick has weakened slightly in the last 24 hours, it continues on its forecast track with its sights set on the Baja California, Mexico peninsula. In preparation for the advancing Category 3 hurricane, Mexico has issued a Hurricane Watch for much of southern Baja as the storm is forecast to make landfall late Tuesday night / early Wednesday morning.
The storm was a powerful Category 5 storm with winds of 180 mph just yesterday. Drier air and cooler waters though have decreased the storm intensity to a Category 3 hurricane with winds of 125 mph. Additional weakening is forecast but the National Hurricane Center warns that “Rick is still expected to be a dangerous hurricane as it approaches the southern Baja peninsula.”
Hurricane force winds extend out from the center of the storm 60 miles and tropical storm force winds extend 175 miles out. Areas along southern Baja and the west-central coast of Mexico can expect large swells from the storm causing dangerous surf conditions.
